The Freaky Girls takes the form of a forgotten vintage poster advertising a travelling freak show, an imagined relic from a time when difference was placed on display as entertainment.

The work began as a playful exploration of the visual language surrounding freak shows their bold typography, theatrical imagery, exaggerated characters, and promise of something strange waiting to be seen. As I developed the piece, I became increasingly interested in the history behind this imagery and spent time looking into the real stories of freak shows and the people who were exhibited within them.

What initially appears as a nostalgic and playful poster therefore carries a darker undertone. The work reflects on the complicated relationship between spectacle, curiosity, entertainment, and the human desire to look at what is considered different. Through The Freaky Girls, I recreate this visual world through my own characters, combining humor and theatricality with a deeper reflection on the history that inspired it.
